Robin Trower: The Playful Heart

One of the best guitarists to come out of the UK, Robin Trower gained popularity in Procol Harum (til 71), but especially on his solo career, with a band with his name. His style is ever compared to Hendrix, but it is actually unfair to a composer and player of his talent to live in the shadow of other player, even if we're talking about Hendrix! wWe're talking about a man that gave lessons to Robert Fripp!

To my surprise, I found out recently that the man continues to make music! He has actually published regularly. His last album is from 2010, and it's not bad at all!

What stroke me watching the second video I'm posting is his age. He was born in 45, so he will be 68 this year... This is something new, the longevity of rock musicians. We were used to singers getting old - and singing till they die - but not to see those free and long haired spirits of the 60's and 70's rocking their asses out but looking like Mr. Burns from The Simpsons... It's weird! But I'm glad that so many of them are still making music and playing live.

LSD

Alexis Korner and Snape

O ano promete!

Yo La Tengo: Fade

The Villagers: Awayland

DK again: The Young Flowers

Strat Magic: Eric Johnson, Clifs of Dover

Oscar, The Hypno Dog And Other Tails

"and it's only when he is naked that he feels his heart
in the whorehouse desert of his patriot's heart"

if you want to see something patriotic there's a stripper
he don't that look that good but he's got an all american smile
that fills his underwear with all the lonely dollars
from all the lonely men who no one ever suffers
who wait around this bar and spend all their lonely hours
they're already gone, no one's running for cover
the farther the run away, away the more you have to hide in the dark
white as the worm that crawls in the patriots heart

its so red white and blue the way he works the bar
selling his embraces like mr. president or a fallen star
and he doesn't care if you're worldly or wise
he's looking for men with sin in their eyes and
he always says the same thing: he says how are you doing baby
I'm your rod and your staff and for a tip you can touch me
and after a few tequilas he becomes something holy
and this crappy little bar with its sweating mirrors and it's milted ceiling
is more full of love than even natural selection
and dollar for dollar babe - its a better bargain
the more you pay the more I can break you all apart
dollars pour like ashes from the patriots' heart

now he knows that your good time will kill him
but the thought of getting old doesn't thrill him
he says give me all your money and don't tell me what you're thinking
I'm the past you wasted I'm the future you're obliterating
c'mon grandpa remind me what you're celebrating
that you're heart heart finally dried up
or that it finally stopped working and
how you make a dead man come is the undertakers art
make 'em shine like the alcohol that preserves the patriots heart

we all want a patriots heart
give me a patriots heart

you could see him fade with the dawn and a pile of washington's
with his head in a spin - happy to pass out again
he would rather fade into the static than hear the violins
that whine like old lovers who whine that they loved him
he would rather laugh alone in the dark with the soft hands of heaven
because they leave him alone with his entertainment system
he does it for the money but he gives more than he's given
he does it for the money but he gives more than he's given
and its only when he's naked that he feels his heart
in the whorehouse desert of the patriots' heart

we all want a patriots heart

George Martin - Theme One

NICO - Drama of Exile, LP, 1981
Destacam-se "Purple Lips", "Sixty Forty", "Waiting for the Man" e uma versão espectral de "Heroes".

AND ALSO THE TREES - The Critical Distance, EP, 1987

THE SHADOWS - Greatest Hits, 1963
"Pronto!

SUPERTRAMP, Crisis? What Crisis?, 1975

Hey Crimson Heads. watch out Prog this month

The December edition of Prog Magazine is mostly dedicated to King Crimson and features an exclusive interview with Robert Fripp. The included CD also includes an alternative take of "Easy Money", from the 40th Anniversary Edition of "Larks Tongues in Aspic". It's a feast for all the Crimson heads out there.

And they also go a bit before "In the Court of Crimson King", to remember that lovely english carousel of "The Cheerful Insanity of Giles, Giles & Fripp", a jewel not to be forgotten in Fripp's treasure arc.

Fripp finally assumes, Crimson were aiming at being the best band in the world (for some, including this humble blogger, they are).

And it's goodnight for Michael Dunford (Renaissance)

Michael Dunford with Annie Haslam
November 20th saw the passing away of Michael Dunford, at his home in Surrey, just after he returned an US Tour. He died of a violent brain haemorrhage.

Michael was one of the oldest members of Renaissance, the distinctive english progressive act that enjoyed huge success in the United States, largely due to incredible Annie Haslam voice and to the composing talents of Dunford, among other band members. Dunford joined the second and more sucessful incarnation of Renaissance, the one that launched "Prologue" in 1972.

Best of 2012: Spiritualized: Sweet Heart, Sweet Light

As usual with Jason Peirce, be it in Spacemen 3 or Spiritualized, when you start to listen to one of his works is like stepping into a vessel that will take you on a long trip and will you leave somewhere. Even if you are left close to the departure point you will feel far away, transfixed by the experience. That is the case of the most recent work of Spiritualized, "Sweet Light Sweet Heart", composed while Jason was doing liver medication, that left in mental the state that he translated into the expression "huh?", that appears on the cover.

The album was inspired by the experience of playing live "Ladies and Gentlemen, we are floating in Space" and was played entirely in his show in the Royal Albert Hall in November 2011 (that I, for some stupid reason, missed, although I was in London at the time). The official video for the first song, "Hey Jane", is not for everyone...

Although not universally acclaimed, this is one of the albums of the year to me.

Best of 2012: Patti Smith: Banga

Restless as ever, Patti Smith delivered one of the major works of the year, a compelling record. The japanese Tsunami, Amy Winehouse, Amerigo Vespucci and almost everythhing comes to life in a recitative form that Patti made her own as years grew by. Very much recommended.

Best of 2012: Back catalogue: Frank Zappa Reeditions

Reedition of the Year:

After the Zappa Family regaining control of Zappa’s extensive catalog, on a deal signed with Universal, they began releasing the original albums.

The first batch was released in July and another batch was expected in September, but didn’t make it till now.

Among this batch of twelve there are some works that are absolute classics and masterpieces. Apart from the groundbreaking "Freak Out!", that I personally find difficult to listen to today, "Hot Rats", "Burnt Weeny Sandwich" and "Chinga's Revenge" are some of my favourite Zappa Records. I bought Hot Rats and have to say that the remaster, made in 2008 from the original tapes, is very good and allowed me to listen to the record in a different way, discovering details that I didn't know were there.

This is was the first batch of releases:
1. Freak Out! (1966)
2. Absolutely Free (1967)
3. Lumpy Gravy (1968)
4. We're Only In It For The Money (1968)
5. Cruising With Ruben & The Jets (1968)
6. Uncle Meat (1969)
7. Hot Rats (1969)
8. Burnt Weeny Sandwich (1970)
9. Weasels Ripped My Flesh (1970)
10. Chunga's Revenge (1970)
11. Fillmore East, June 1971 (1971)
12. Just Another Band From L.A. (1972)

Whatever, aqui fica "I Only have eyes for you", em que ambos cantam.

A new state of the soul: Goodbye Ravi Shankar

He is probably more know today for being the father of pop jazz artist Norah Jones, but Norah is not the only daughter of Ravi Shankar, deceased yesterday at 93 after heart surgery. His legacy is probably best represented by his daughter Anoushka, that also plays the sitar and that has played with him many times.

Ravi Shankar was revered in the sixties for bringing the indian culture to the west and mixing influences of classical indian music and rock. A good friend of the Beatles, especially of George Harrison, he mixed influences also in the jazz (e.g. John Coltrane)  and in the classical field (e.g André Previn). He also played at rock events like Monterey and Woodstock.

He was, on his own, a legend, and one of the musical icons of the last century.

Desta feita é a banda sonora do musical (!) que a banda criou, "yoshimi battles the pink robots", a partir do (excelente!) álbum de 2002 do mesmo nome. Pena o musical estar em exibição em La Jolla, California... (será algum festival da cerveja?).

Feeling Yourself Disintegrate Freak Out Film

Sex Covers: Wishbone Ash - There's the Rub

Sex is one of the main drivers of the world (some say "THE" main driver), and has been very frequently associated with rock music. This could be the subject of an entire book given the numerous examples we can easily find. The image of rock is the "macho" image usually associated with Rolling Stones and the likes.

The cover of the albums (in a time when they were meant to be seen) reflected frequently hot topics, centered on the woman body. But man has also been presented in some covers, usually exploring the penis as a symbol. This 1974 Wishbone Ash (a rock / hard rock band from the seventies) album that I bought recently is a particularly good one, that could go along with the Stones' "Sticky Fingers". The cover is by the famous Hignosis firm.

The best of 2012: Paul Buchanan

We start today a review of some of the works that have pushed the envelope in 2012. No special criteria, no attempt to make definitive choices, it's basically sharing some of the music that caught our attention.

Paul Buchanan is better know as Mr. Blue Nile; after four albums and eight years of silence, Paul returned this year as if nothing happened; even more, as if Blue Nile was him and him alone. The spirit is here, but reduced to the essence. Songs of loneliness that scarcely arise from silence. Voice, piano, occasional synth and a faraway orchestra.

This is not for everyone, as Blue Nile wasn't. But for those who is, is a lot

Great Gigs in the Cloud: Episode 1

After so many full concerts shared here on "Perulandia", I've decided to start a new line of posts that shall be called from now on Great Gigs in the Cloud and what better way to start than with a music video that reminds us somehow the proposed title. Would you agree?

Although it would take them after this film two years before they would publish an album with a music that had a title that resembled in any way the title of these new line of posts (despite this video being an edited release in 1974 with studio recordings of Dark Side of The Moon), I thought of it as a good excuse to publish another Floyd act!

Anyway it was this particular video that triggered the idea of starting this new wave of posts, so although historically the suggestion isn't quite precise, the intention is good.

Fã: The Unthanks - Diversions Vol.3

Genesis: Live 1973

Never ceases to amaze me!

Why wasn't there any high definition digital recording technology in those days? What a shame that most of these old 70's gigs where so poorly recorded.

There were some exceptions such as Led Zeppelin's "The song remains the same" film that was originally  shot on 35mm with a 24-track quadraphonic sound recording, at a cost of $85,000 to shoot the live footage in the US alone. The band's manager, Peter Grant, called it "the most expensive home movie ever made", and today we all thank the band for that "management" decision! Kudos for the band's investment.

But most of them didn't had the public nor the funds that would justify such an investment.

Either way it's all about the music and the show itself and boy did PG's Genesis era know how to put one.

Nowadays newer generations don't get that much impressed with the characterization used at the time neither with the production level of these shows. I understand, I really do...

But you need to put things in context and a instead of being more excited with the high technicolor production level of today's standard, really listen to the music and pay attention to the story telling.

Absolute bliss if you ask me. Just my

The WHO live at the Isle of Wight 1970

oh not again...

Here he comes once more with another "The Who" post, you might all say!

The truth is that I just couldn't go by yet another great finding on youtube and keep it just for myself.

I'll leave you with The Who's full concert video that was held in August of 1970 on the isle of Wright, in England.

Where they plugged directly to High voltage power line or what? Completely contagious vibe...

Jeez Pete, did you need to be that theatrical? Just kidding...

"The Isle of Wight Festival is a music festival which takes place every year on the Isle of Wight in England. It was originally held from 1968 to 1970. These original events were promoted and organised by the Foulk brothers (Ron, Ray and Bill Foulk) under the banner of their company Fiery Creations Limited. The venues were Ford Farm (near Godshill), Wootton and Afton Down (near Freshwater) respectively. The 1969 event was notable for the appearance of Bob Dylan and the Band. This was Dylan's first paid performance since his motor cycle accident some three years earlier, and was held at a time when many still wondered if he would ever perform again. Followers from across the world trecked to the Isle of Wight for what seemed like a 'second coming'. Estimates of 150,000--250,000 attended. The 1969 festival opened on Friday 29 August—eleven days after the close of Woodstock. Dylan was living in Woodstock, New York, at the time and it was widely believed that he would perform there, after the event had been "put in his own backyard". As it happened, Dylan left for the Isle of Wight on 15 August—the day the Woodstock festival began.
The 1970 event was by far the largest and most famous of these early festivals; indeed it was said at the time to be one of the largest human gatherings in the world, with estimates of over 600,000, surpassing the attendance at Woodstock. Included in the line-up of over fifty performers were The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis, The Doors, Ten Years After, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Joni Mitchell, The Moody Blues, Melanie, Donovan, Free, Chicago, Richie Havens, John Sebastian, Leonard Cohen, Jethro Tull, Taste and Tiny Tim. The unexpectedly high attendance levels led, in 1971, to Parliament passing the "Isle of Wight Act" preventing gatherings of more than 5,000 people on the island without a special licence.
The 1970 festival was filmed by a 35mm film crew under the direction of future Academy Award-winning director Murray Lerner who at that point had just directed the Academy Award-nominated documentary Festival of the Newport Folk Festival. The footage passed to Lerner in settlement of legal fees after a dispute with the Foulk brothers in which the two sides claimed against each for breach of contract. Lerner distilled material from the festival into the film A Message to Love: The Isle of Wight Rock Festival released theatrically in 1996 and subsequently on DVD. In addition to this film, Lerner has created full-length films focused on performances by individual artists at the 1970 festival. To date there have been individual films of The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, The Moody Blues, Free, Leonard Cohen and Jethro Tull.
The event was revived in 2002 at Seaclose Park, a recreation ground on the outskirts of Newport. It has been held annually since that year, progressively extending itself northwards beyond Seaclose Park along the fields of the eastern Medina valley. Many notable artists have performed since its revival including The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Muse, Stereophonics, Donovan, Ray Davies, Robert Plant, David Bowie, Manic Street Preachers, The Who, R.E.M., Coldplay, The Proclaimers, Bryan Adams and The Police. It was sponsored by Nokia from 2004 to 2006. The promoters of the event now are Solo Music Agency and promotions. Apart from being held on the Isle of Wight, and featuring the now customary artwork of Dave Roe, there is no connection with the festivals of 1968--1970."

Birdman

McDonald and Giles, as to be one of the greatest hidden gems of the 70's.

Sometimes I wonder how Fripp's project, aka KC, would've turned out should Ian McDonald & Micheal Giles stayed on the band.
More life celebrating?

Anyway, tonight I'll leave you with a theme that I enjoy especially when played in the wee hours...
