The Best Songs In the World #13- Bob Dylan - "You're a Big Girl Now"

This is a very strange situation. Original Bob Dylan original songs are not on Youtube. The aggressive Sony policy towards rights protection just eliminated all original songs. I've searched through dozens of versions and live takes to realize this is the plain truth.

To me, this is the ultimate Bob Dylan song, from his best album, "Blood on the Tracks", 1974. Of course it is difficult to single out a track in Dylan's vast canon, and everyone has its favourite. Who cares? I vote for this one.

My Morning Jacket's, from a recent cover version album, captures the feeling and emulates almost the voice of the original. It's a pretty cover, but look for the original and it's very unique loose and melancholic feeling. It is a gem in an album that has quite a few.

Written for the film "More" from Barbet Schroeder in 1969, this reflective piece that describes a dream, or a trip, it's a high piece of art. In my humble opinion.

It is also one of the great contributions of the underrated keyboardist, Rick Wright, that often played extended solos on liver versions of the theme.

From their final 1989 album, a simple, frail, but haunting song. Dark images, like a XIX century romantic poem. Not one you would tipically find in this kind of poles. In my mind it is close to the next one - Cymbaline, from Pink Floyd.

In a recent attempt to list my personal favourites and contenders for the best songs in the world I easily reached 200. And that's from top of my mind... It can get to thousands in a blink of an eye, and the problem is that there is no easy way to sort out the best ones.

So, I will leave to the spur of the moment, knowing that the "spur" is deeply anchored on memories and experience of listening to the songs over and over again.

St. Vincent - Bah!

St. Vincent é uma fraude. O 5º álbum de St. VIncent - que leva somente o nome dela- é o pior de todos. Semi-modernaça mas sem conteúdo, Goldfrapp desnatada, Florence + The Machine sem balls, pretensamente arty mas parola.

Abundam os teclados de pacotilha (como em "Regret"). Parece tudo feito numa versão redux do Garage Band ("Bring me your love") ou anos 80 remastigados (Psychopath). A tentar imitar Lana Del Rey, mas sem o dettachment calculado dela ("I prefer your love"). Pretensiosamente alternativa. Uma total fake.

Delete e fast forward.

Velhas Pancas: Moondog - O Viking da 6ª Avenida

This is Serious stuff!

Moondog, vagabundo das ruas de Nova Iorque, cego, lunático, escreveu alguma da melhor música dos 60 (para me cingir a um período). E esta, hein?

Não é brincadeira: Ouçam este álbum (1969). É verdadeiramente incrível!

Moondog, born Louis Thomas Hardin (May 26, 1916 – September 8, 1999), was a blind American composer, musician, poet and inventor of several musical instruments. Moving to New York as a young man, Moondog made a deliberate decision to make his home on the streets there, where he spent approximately twenty of the thirty years he lived in the city. Most days he could be found in his chosen part of town wearing clothes he had created based on his own interpretation of the Norse god Odin. Thanks to his unconventional outfits and lifestyle, he was known for much of his life as "The Viking of 6th Avenue".

The Art Ensemble of Chicago was at the forefront of avant-garde Jazz in the 1960s and 1970s. Les Stances A Sophie was recorded during a period when the band was living in Paris, France. They were asked to create a score for a movie Les Stances A Sophie by the French New Wave director Moshe Misrahi. The music was never used for the film, but it was released as an album on its own. The album gets off to a great start with Theme De Yoyo, a hot Jazz-Funk piece. The song has a strong drum track by Don Moye and a catchy bass line that would make a great loop. It also features the vocals of Fontella Bass of “Rescue Me” fame, who was married to the band’s trumpet player, Lester Bowie. The rest of the album varies between the avant guard, Theme De Celine, mood pieces, Variations Sur Un Theme De Monteverdi (I), and straight Jazz, Variations Sur Un Theme De Monteverdi (II). There are definitely moments that might excite a producer, but for Soul-Jazz lovers, just play Theme De Yoyo over and over, it’s that good.

Midlake - Antiphon

O álbum de 2013 dos Midlake, regressados depois de passarem um momento crítico - a perda do seu líder, Tim Smith, depois de dois anos de gravações para um novo álbum - ganhou lugar nas listas dos melhores do ano. "Antiphon" tem indubitávelmente algo dos antgos Midlake, mas já é outra coisa. O grupo ganhou adeptos entre as cabeças prog, talvez devido às excursões instrumentais do álbum e o bom uso da flauta. Na verdade, já antes eram identificados como objetos voadores desta área pelo radar prog, a que não será alheio o facto de o anterior líder manifestar o interesse por bandas como Jethro Tull e Radiohead(os quais já ganharam definitivamente o estatuto Prog... seja lá o que isso significa).

Sem editarem desde 2010, este é um regresso saudado de uma que é uma das melhores bandas da atualidade, na opinião deste escriba.
Tenho andado às voltas com o álbum para decidir se gosto verdadeiramente. O que é difícil é ter como comparação "The Courage of Others" e sobretudo "The trials of Van Occupanther". Se há temas que são orelhudos, como este The Old and the Young, fica alguma sensação de alguma monotonia criada pelo ritmo quase "motorika" (a batida criada pelos alemães Neu! em alguns álbuns classicos dos anos 70). Se algo posso dizer de consistente é que lhe falta o brilhantismo dos dois últimos álbuns, embora não seja, de modo nenhum, um mau trabalho. Vejamos o que se vai passar a seguir e como evoluem estes Midlake.

"Antiphon", sim ou não? Enfim, você decidji, como se diria no Brasiu...

Camel em Portugal em Março

Aula Magna, 16 de Março (Domingo)

Os Camel tocam em Portugal, na onda do ressurgimento da banda. O concerto vai ser dedicado a "The Snow Goose", obra do prog mais melódico que se fez em terras de Sua Majestade, inspirada numa novela de Paul Gallico. Esta obra, que não é tocada ao vivo desde 1975, foi regravada no final de 2013. Andy Latimer, leader e guitarrista está de volta à atividade, depois de uma doença prolongada que o incapacitou durante vários anos.

Numa nota pessoal, o The Snow Goose nunca me impressionou muito, mas ouvi a regravação de 2013 e gostei bastante. Antecipo um bom concerto...

New Vibe: Shit Robot

Em ritmo dançante (sim, porque já não há quem aguente a música de Natal!) aqui fica um dos novos temas dos Shit Robot (aliás, o irlandês Marcus Lambkin), que estão prestes a dançar o seu segundo álbum. Apesar de não ser propriamente género (o dançante), que faz as minhas delícias auditivas, o primeiro disco deles foi delciosamente kitsch e barulhentamente percutivo, mas com piada, teclados à la 80 e uma participação dos Hot Chip muito recomendável. Marcus vem ao Musicbox no dia 18 de Janeiro para um DJ set e provavelmente apresentar este segundo, "We got a Love"

Portanto, antes que velha o velho barrigudo, este Perú vai dançar!

Pérolas: Throw it Away - Abbey Lincoln

Um tema trasncendente de Abbey Lincoln, numa versão de um dos seus álbuns dos anos 90, já com mais de 70 anos, este com com Pat Metheny ("A Turtle's Dream"). Tive a sorte de a ver ao vivo em Varsóvia, no festival anual de Jazz, no Palac Kultury i Nauky, em 2002, uma presença magnética e uma voz burilada pela vida. Ouvindo interpretações destas, fluindo como uma corrente, pergunto-me porque perco tempo no pop rock da vida...

Best of: After Crying - De Profundis

Estes húngaros After Crying são dos mais incríveis grupos de rock que já existiram. Fazem uma fusão de clássico e rock progressivo absolutamente irrepreensível. Outras influencias citáveis são Frank Zappa e Emerson Lake and Palmer (mais nos primeiros discos).

Pena que sejam tão pouco conhecidos (como atesta, alías, o reduzido número de visualizações no youtube).Tenho todos os seus discos até 2003 e o único que me parece dispensável é o penúltimo, "Show", embora tenha um tema muito bom, "Secret Service"

Em particular o seu álbum "De Profundis", de 1996, é muito bom. Negro, torturado e brilhante.
Este tema, "Stalker", é magnífico. 5 estrelas sem hesitação. Muito crimsoniano da era Larks Tongues in Aspic, mas de forma nenhuma se reduz à influência.

Roy Harper – Man and Myth

Já algumas páginas se escreveram sobre o regresso de Roy Harper aos originais, mas não é tarde para o Perú saltar em cena. Primeiro, porque foi só em Outubro que o álbum saiu, segundo porque o salto de um Perú é sempre elegante. A aterragem é que pode não ser…

Pois então: Roy Harper está nos 70, e não é de modo gratuito que o trabalho se intula “Hom

em e Mito”. E não é por acaso que Harper aparece na capa ornamentado comum par de chifres de bode. Harper é o fauno da música inglesa, criatura silvestre e fugidia, de perfil independente e másculo. Harper, o bardo genial e incómodo. Harper, o Mestre reverenciado por gente tão insuspeita como Jimmy Page, ou Joanna Newson. Harper, o ausente, a figura paternal equívoca.

Eis a questão: começa a chegar a altura de avaliar as figuras fundadoras da música moderna. A maior parte deles não dura muito, pelos cânones normais da existência. A morte de Lou Reed foi um golpe rude; foi o mais recente dos grandes mitos a cair, e um particularmente importante. Roy Harper não tem a projecção nem a importância de Reed, mas é uma figura de referência que vem a ganhar relevância com a idade. Quem será o próximo? Leonard Cohen? Neil Young? Mick Jagger? David Crosby? Roger Waters? Joni Mitchell? Paul Simon? Bob Dylan? Burt Bacharach? Ennio Morricone?

Qualquer uma destas perdas começa a parecer essencial, e a sua importância a ser avaliada pelo vazio que a sua presença cria. Mas não será antes porque nos recordam como a sua obra nos tocou? Acho que sim.
Muitas vezes me questiono como se mede a importância e a permanência da música. Para mim, que ouço música de forma compulsiva e apaixonada há 30 e alguns anos, que conheço milhares de obras, é uma pergunta com pertinência. O que se salva do imenso oceano do olvido? O que levar connosco no grande naufrágio? O que se destaca pelo seu lugar na evolução, o que faz avançar para outras viagens?

Muitas vezes, respondo a essa questão com a mais simples emoção: o tema que nos faz subir lágrimas aos olhos, de tão simples. A invenção de três acordes que, acompanhada das palavras certas, fez uma revolução. A energia que de tão intensa sugou toda uma geração. Há fenómenos assim, e os nomes assim mencionados não são ocasionais – são essenciais, entre muitos outros, para moldar um futuro. Para fabricar descendência. Não é despropositado dizer que uns Fleet Foxes não poderiam existir sem Roy Harper. Já para não falar de descendência quase incestuosa como Jonathan Wilson e David Crosby e Graham Nash, aliás só assumida no último álbum de JW, em que ambos participam no espantoso “Cecil Taylor”. Ou dizer que toda a folk de autor feminina é descendente de Joni Mitchell, de forma mais ou menos direta. Já para não falar de exemplos tão batidos como os Beatles e a influência no nascimento do rock psicadélico, progressivo, na pop e sabe-se lá mais o quê que nasceu da obra do seu período 1966-1970.
Traçar estas linhas é uma questão de razão e emoção.

Um DVD que comprei há uns meses mostrava RH sozinho no estúdio, uma guitarra, um grupo pequeno, hipnotizado, suspenso de cada uma das suas palavras e inflexões, mais que reverente, embevecido. O que faz um ancião (e não há que ter medo das palavras, num país em que os velhos apodrecem em lares indignos), mover uma sala? Não poderia ele estar também com uma manta nas pernas, um chá na mão, a ver as gouchices de um qualquer idiota televisivo?
Creio que é a noção que algumas destas figuras têm de que o seu lugar essencial ainda não foi preenchido que as leva a pegar na guitarra, sentar-se ao piano e dizer: estou vivo! Esta é a minha arte. Este é o caso de Bill Fay, por exemplo. Os Family voltam dar concertos. Os Camel ressuscitaram. Os Barclay James Harvest gravam de novo. Os Moody Blues organizam cruzeiros onde é possível ficar pedrado durante 9 noites ao som de Roger Daltrey, Jon Anderson e figuras mais e menos obscuras dos últimos 40 anos de musica anglo-saxonica. O passado nunca esteve tão vivo (embora, e até pelos exemplos atrás, com graus de relevância muito diferentes…)
Sem entrar em polémicas musicais sobre o valor de muitas das obras produzidas, a verdade é que estamos a passar de uma época em que os criadores produziram e interpretaram as suas obras para uma época em que outros as interpretam. De forma mais ou menos reverente, surgem grupos que, tal como acontece no jazz ou na música dita “clássica”, interpretam obras de música popular. E, na realidade, é quando alguém pega na obra e a lê como objeto estranho que a obra revela o seu caráter plástico. É certo que é possível pegar no inefável José Cid e fazer um quarteto de cordas do macaco que gosta de banana, e exemplos não faltam de índole semelhante, como os Apocalyptica a “classificarem” Metallica, mas não é a mesma coisa. Hoje em dia começam a aparecer intérpretes – músicos que leem a música e a letra e que, com respeito pelo original, lhe transmitem um cunho pessoal. Vamos ver mais disto nos próximos anos em obras de gente que admiramos.

Na raiz de tudo isto está musica verdadeira – música que transporta as pessoas.

Dito isto, tenho que fazer uma defesa dos velhos. Não dos que fazem render uma música velha e passada, como John Lees dos BJH, mas dos que vivem a sua idade. Como Bill Fay a cantar “Life is People” ou RH a cantar “January Man”. Quantas vezes temos a oportunidade de entrar na alma de uma pessoa e lê-la sem intermediários? Quantas vezes é possível passar por cima de todas as imagens reflectidas que cada um cria para afastar a proximidade, qual estrume emocional em cima de campos estéreis? Em RH não há bullshit. Em January Man ele diz-nos, “January Man must do what it can to keep winter at bay”, a propósito de todas as emoções impróprias que afloram na presença de uns jovens olhos do tamanho do oceano, para pedir desculpa por ter perdido o controlo das suas emoções. Um testemunho da mortalidade e da distância entre o espírito e o corpo de um homem a afastar-se da sua vida.

Portanto, 47 anos depois de ter começado, RH lança o seu 23º álbum, 13 anos depois do último. Com a produção de Jonathan Wilson, uma ajudinha de Pete Tonwnsend em “Cloud Cuckooland”. It’s only rock’n’roll, baby, and I like it.
Se quiserem ir para trás, explorar este rico passado, ouçam “When an old cricketeer leaves the crease”, de “HQ” , “Bullinamingvase” ou “Stormcock”.

Placebo ( Os outros!)

Antes dos Placebo que conhecemos hoje, existiram outros, pioneiros na cena jazz belga a explorar sonoridades entre o jazz e o rock, como tantos fizeram na esteira de Miles Davis. O resultado final é interessante.

Como curiosidade, o líder da banda era o pianista Marc Moulin, que hoje tem bastante projecção na música eletrónica francesa. Marc Moulin faleceu em 2008.

O álbum original é naturalmente difícil de encontrar, e os cds que Marc Moulin publicou como antologia da banda estão a atingir preços elevados(95€ na Amazon francesa para a primeira compilação!)

New Zealand act SCHTUNG was formed by Andrew Hagen and Morton Wilson sometime around the mid 70's, and their self-titled album from 1977 is the only production from this band while still exploring art rock territories.

While their album is something of an obscurity these days, the band made an impact when active, but in a peculiar area: They were asked to make scores on the strength of their sole production.

As a direct result of this branching out, Hagen and Wilson would go on to form Schtung Music in 1982, a still ongoing concern based in Santa Monica, California with regional offices in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Shanghai. Prefab Sprout: "Crimson / Red" em Outubro

É lançado em Outubro o novo álbum dos Prefab Sprout, Crimson / Red. Os PS são hoje apenas Paddy McAloon, o homem que dizia ser o melhor escritor de canções que alguma vez existiu. Modesto.... A sua voz é instantaneamente reconhecível, embora a sua aparência tenha mudado profundamente, devido àquele factor estético chamado PDI, mas também porque está praticamente cego, além de ter uma deficiência auditiva grave que o impede de ouvir as baixas frequencias.

Nada disto se nota na sua música,q ue continua jovial e celebratória.

Os PS são uma banda de culto, um pouco esquecidos hoje em dia. IMHO, produziram uma obra-prima que é talvez o disco menos ouvido deles, "Andromeda Heigths", uma corrente de energia positiva, vibração, amor. Não andasse este Perú tão preguiçoso e faria o merecido elogio crítico ao disco - assim, tomem lá um tema do novo álbum.

Acabadinho de chegar da Amazon - o único disco dos Fuzzy Duck, e raridade em vinil da Vertigo (cerca de 500€ em segunda mão...), em reediçao em CD da Esoteric Recordings.

Wiki knowledge: Fuzzy Duck was an English progressive rock group from London, formed in 1970. Their self-titled studio album Fuzzy Duck was released in 1971. It featured Mick Hawksworth of Five Day Week Straw People and Andromeda, as well as Crazy World of Arthur Brown keyboardist Roy Sharland and drummer Paul Francis of Tucky Buzzard (and later of Tranquility).[1] The band was not named after the drinking game, but rather was coined by the album art designer, Jonathon Coudrille.[2] The group disbanded soon after the release of their full-length, but enduring interest in the band led to reissues on CD by Akarma Records and Repertoire Records.[3]

As primeiras impressões: é heavy prog, o primeiro tema é o mais forte e o mais interessante do disco. Também se destaca o tema 7, In Our time.É uma obra para completistas, mas tem os seus momentos interessantes, com bons momentos movidos a Hammond e guitarradas competentes. Comparações: Uriah heep, Deep Purple,
Vanilla Fudge.

Novo de Bill Calahan em Setembro

Setembro (lamento dizer-vos, mas vem mesmo aí!), anuncia-se já mais simpático. Bill Calahan, um dos nomes atuais a acompanhar com maior atenção, publica a 17 o sucessor so ótimo Apocalypse e prepara-se para uma digressão (Já esteve na Feira aí há uns quatro anos). Esperemos que inclua Portugal! Entretanto aqui um pequeno concerto em ambiente íntimo:

A minha alma está parva como é que estes tipos me escaparam completamente durante estes anos que levo de vida!

Confirma-se que os anos 1967-1975 produziram uma tal quantidade de boa música que só hoje temos a distância necessária e o crivo crítico para entender o fenómeno.

Estes nova-iorquinos de Brooklyn que se mudaram para a Alemanha têm uma fusão rock jazz de muito bom gosto, muito bem tocada, um ritmo contagiante (excelente baterista!), excursões instrumentais de alto nível, incluindo solos de saxofone, composições interessantes. E ainda tocam uma versão de Soft Parade, dos The Doors.

Morreu na segunda-feira por causa do raio da leucemia...

Relembro o LP "I love the blues, she heard my cry", que não é fácil de encontrar...

O George Duke é, para mim, um grande músico, apesar de ter composto alguns dos temas mais inaudíveis de sempre (insuportáveis mesmo).
Os tempos que passou com o Zappa fizeram-lhe bem e o próprio trabalho do Zappa não ficou imune a essa convivência (pe. New York, Roxy and Elsewhere, só para citar dois)...

Enfim, mais um que se foi.

aquilo que vos posso dizer é que o melhor álbum deles (dela) desde "Felt Mountain", o que é dizer muito, e que se assemelha a ele pelo ambiente intimista e confessional - o que é dizer ainda mais.

Parece que Allison Goldfrapp se cansou de ser sexy (parafraseando o grupo brasileiro), e voltou a ser muito sexy.

I find it to be one of the downsides / turnoffs of digitally distributed music over the net. You miss that joy of picking up your 'swissy', tear the plastic or carton apart, and ravish your newly acquired record....

Or even worst, missing on spending half a morning on a record shop searching for new music!

And yes, there is something special about the smell of old vinyl records... Anyway...

Sometimes is voice reminds me of Roger Waters voice... Not that there's any resemblance to Waters music...
