A Happy New Year to you all. We're back at our work stations today, refreshed after the Christmas break and its chuckling bounty of Vicar Of Dibley and other vintage TV comedy repeats (oh, how we laughed!). We are of course now revving up for 2012 and its many onrushing excitements, prominent among them the new issue of Uncut, which has just gone on sale, with a cover story on the mighty Creedence Clearwater Revival, who in the early 70s were just about the biggest band in the world.

In a timely enough manner, there's also a look forward to some of the major releases coming our way over the next several months, including new albums from Paul Weller, which he tells us in all apparent seriousness was partly influenced by Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music and in other instances by what used to be called krautrock. Among other other Uncut favourites talking about their new records in the issue are Patti Smith, John Lydon, Paul McCartney, John Cale, Damon Albarn, Devendra Banhart, Wayne Coyne, Dylan LeBlanc and Jason Pierce.

Elsewhere, we are in Nashville for an exclusive interview with The Black Keys, following the release of their terrific El Camino album, spend some predictably bizarre time with Lawrence, frontman, variously, of Felt, Denim and Go Kart Mozart, whose career is the subject of a remarkable new documentary, Lawrence Of Belgravia, and pay tribute to Jackie Leven, the uncompromising and brilliant Scottish singer-songwriter who died recently of cancer.

We also celebrate the 40th anniversary of Curtis Mayfield's Superfly, Teenage Fanclub tell us about the making of "Everything Flows" and uber-producer Daniel Lanois talks us through some of the seminal albums he's worked on, among them Dylan's Oh Mercy and Time Out Of Mind, Neil Young's Le Noise, Emmylou Harris' Wrecking Ball, Peter Gabriel's So and U2's The Joshua Tree.

In the Uncut Review, meanwhile, we get pretty excited about Leonard Cohen's Old Ideas, his first studio album for eight years and the first solo album from The Hold Steady's Craig Finn. There's also a surely essential four-CD Howlin' Wolf box set, a four-disc, 75 track collection of Bob Dylan covers by such as Pete Townshend, Elvis Costello, Lucinda Williams, Mark Knopfler and, er Sting, the proceeds from which are intended for Amnesty International and the entire PiL back catalogue is reconsidered by David Quantick, who elsewhere regales us with an hilarious account of a colourful meeting in Milan, some years ago, with Grace Jones.

Uncut

Ainda deve andar por aí a edição da Uncut de Setembro que traz em CD anexo o melhor de 2011.. so far! É de ouvir. O tema de capa são os Doors e os últimos ritos de Jim Morrison.

Curiosidade: nas escolhas da redacção, aparece recomendada a reediçãod o álbum "Guitarra Portuguesa" de 1971 de Carlos Paredes.

Mojo e Uncut

A última edição da Uncut dá justo destaque ao álbum dos Fleet Foxes, "Helplessness Blues", que tem feito a as delícias deste Perú.

A Mojo consegue uma (rara!) entrevista com Kate Bush, que está prestes a lançar um álbum, "Director's Cut", que revisita e reapresenta temas de "The Red Shoes" and "The Sensual World". À falta de sucessor para o excelente "Aerial" (excelente!), não será refeição de somenos. Entretanto, já circula um tema na net.

Não menos importante, o CD da Mojo é uma compilação dos The Black Keys, feita por eles e incluindo bandas irmãs, que resulta num trabalho muito bem esgalhado que se ouve com prazer. Os Black Keys são, a par com os The White Stripes (preto e branco! nunca tinha pensado nisso!), as melhores razões para pensar que o bom rock, orelhudo e excitante, não morreu.

Uncut - May 2011

Ainda se encontra por aí a Uncut de Maio. Na capa, os Fleet Foxes que acabam de lançar o novo e segundo álbum, "Helplessness Blues". Um segundo álbum que nasce com olhos muito atentos em cima dele.

Mas há mais novidades. Os Midlake, que lançaram o ano passado o excelente "The Courage of Others", lançam agora uma colectânea da colecção "Late Night Tales", que tem dado excelentes colectâneas. Duas delas, a dos Air e a dos Flaming Lips.

Em destaque o novo álbum de Paul Simon, "So Beautiful or so What", também o novo dos TV on the Radio "Nine Types of Light", depois das aventuras a solo de David Sitek com os Maximum Balloon, "Tomboy" de Panda Bear (alegre residente lisboeta e emérito membro dos Animal Collective), é outro a estar atento.

Em especial há que dar relevo à melhor notícia musical de 2011 (so far...), "Apocalypse", de Bill Calahan. O homem dos SMOG, depois do excelente (excelente!) "Sometimes I Wish IWas an Eagle", tem um novo trabalho,mais curto, mas pelas primeiras audições, um sucessor digno, embora mais acre, do anterior. Voltarei a ele.

Os Radiohead continuam  na ribalta com "The King of the Limbs", que agora finalmente tem edição em suporte físico. Bom, mas não radical, como o anterior "In Rainbows". Como nota paralela, John Renbourn, em tempos dos Pentangle de muito boa memória, tem um novo disco de guitarra em "Palermo Snow".

Há mais, claro, mas este Perú satisfaz-se com esta ração de boa música.
